Jewel's Birthday Campout!

Jewel had her 13th Birthday on September 7th! Can you believe it? Our Jewel is 13! Well, this years birthday wish was a fun one. Jewel wanted to go camping with some close friends overnight. It was a lot of fun and thankfully there were no microburst storms this time! What made it even better is that we had the entire area all to ourselves! Just one of the perks of homeschooling and having a birthday the night of the first day of the traditional school year!

Mmmmm.... Pork ribs marinating in a homemade sauce!

Our new tent courtesty of the storm from our last campout!

Our campsite! It's huge! And check out the waterfront view too!

Campfire Stories

Canoeing

We brought our (Jewel's) little dog Patch with us. He was loved and loved every minute of being adored, and fed those tasty rib bones after we had consumed all that we could consume! After Patch could no longer eat anymore ribs, he buried the remaining bones, of course being the little hoarder he is. Unfortunately upon waking in the morning and searching for his bones, Patch found that his bones were all gone. The local wildlife had dug them all up in the evening and taken them away. It was a pitiful sight to see.

Patchy - All tired out after a vigilant night of protecting his people from those noisy woodland critters & being the wonderful poseable puppy.

Mmmm... Blue Crab!

This post is a bit delayed at this actually occured August 24th of 2010.

So we went fishing on the 24th briefly after working in our garden and before Ken had to go to work. We cast out or lines in the Warwick from the pier at Ft. Eustis when Jewel felt a tug. This crab (we found out when she realed him in) did not want to let go of those chicken gizzards we had for bait!

The blue crab Jewel caught in the Warwick River

The crab getting cleaned up & ready to be cooked. Jewel was not going home empty handed this time and this little crab begged to be eaten - especially with his "crabby" attitude!

So no mercy here from Jewel. She put the crabby little guy head first in the pot of boiling water to cook!

Oh yeah... blue crab! Tasty little morsel - little being the operative word.

Good eats! So Jewel being adventurous (always willing to try something new), having listened to some of Ken's interesting food stories from his travels & having watched Andrew Zimmern of the Food Network's Bizzare Foods tried more of the inside of the crab than just the delectable little morsels of meat. Unfortunately for Jewel, she didn't care for them.

More Baby Chicks!

This post is a bit delayed as this actually occured August 17th of 2010.

On the 17th of August we got more baby chicks. 2 more Welsummers, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, and 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago though we lost of the golden laced wyandottes. One was super spunky - (think chick on drugs) and was always advancing faster than the others. One evening while we were asleep she tried to escape her brooder box and it didn't go well. We found her in in the morning. Boo. The rest are doing great though and are getting ready to soon be transferred from the brooder box into the yard!

Jewel's Recital

This post is a bit delayed at this actually occured August 13th of 2010.

Jewel had her first piano recital under the instruction of a most wonderful and talented pianist, Sister Carolina Coates. Jewel has been playing for about 3 years now.

So now sit back in your seat and enjoy the recital!

Day of Fishing... Not Catching

This post is a bit delayed as this actually occured August 13th of 2010.

Our day of fishing was a great one. It started out all warm and cozy...

We headed out to the Newport News Park and picked up our shoreline fishing pass and started to fish...

and fish...

and fish...

Though we didn't catch anything, the day couldn't have been nicer. What a relaxing and enjoyable family retreat.

Wagon Riding - Yahoo!

Sorry! This post is a bit delayed as this actually occured August 9th of 2010.

Jewel looked at her little toy wagon in the backyard and the "gentle" slope, as ideas started to swirl around in her noggin', she decided it sounded like great fun for a homemade wagon ride.

I must admit it looked like tons of fun. Of course there were a few times she met disaster - once when she went right into the fence and hit the 4x4 pole after loosing control of her wagon and the other time (when I wasn't looking) when she decided that she might try and ramp up the excitement by riding her dirt bike on the same tracks... hmmm... that resulted in being tossed over the fence we found out. Thankfully she was okay - but her response "It hurt, but it was so fun! It felt like I was flying!" Well, silly girl that's because you were! Flying off your bike!

Oh to be young and not ache as long after injuries. Chuckling.

Severe Weather Campout... CANCELLED!!

So we're out with some family friends from church out camping. We had set up the tents, the kids were out canoeing in the resevoir, and we're talking about getting the fire set up for dinner when...

THE NATL WEATHER SVC IN WAKEFIELD HAS ISSUED A

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR.
N. CURRITUCK COUNTY IN NE NO. CAROLINA.
ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY IN SE VA.
NORTHEASTERN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY IN SE VA.
CITY OF CHESAPEAKE IN SE VA.
SOUTHEASTERN CITY OF HAMPTON IN SE VA.
S. CITY OF NEWPORT NEWS IN SE VA.
CITY OF NORFOLK IN SE VA.
CITY OF PORTSMOUTH IN SE VA.
N. CITY OF SUFFOLK IN SE VA.
CITY OF VA BEACH IN SE VA.

* UNTIL 830 PM EDT

* AT 722 PM EDT.NATL WEATHER SVC DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS IN
EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING
FROM DENBIGH TO CARRSVILLE.& MOVING EAST AT 50 MPH.

Of course this information came to our computers, NOT to our campsite. One of the families received one message, but the warning they received sounded more like it applied more to Southside of Hampton Roads in Norfolk, surely not the Denbigh area of Newport News!

The day had been hot & beautiful with the exception of shortly after arriving a small squall of wind and rain that came through and was gone as soon as it arrived. Most of the day had been as hot & humid. Of course the weather report earlier in the day said 40% chance of ISOLATED thunderstorms, which usually means a small chance, but it's typically unlikely for this area - especially Denbigh!

Anyhow as we were enjoying setting up camp, the kids playing and canoeing and the families chattering, we noticed what looked to be an impending squall approaching. We're thinking... some heavy rain for a bit, but that's okay, let's just put everything that can get ruined in the rain up. Oh boy! We are glad we did at least that, because it poured, and the wind blew! We saw tents collapsing around us and children screaming from fear in a couple tents, as the tent walls collapsed around them. We ran over to one tent to help two get two girls out of one tent that looked like it was ready to fly away with the (littler) girls in it, held it down, and lifted it up just enough to get the girls out. Another family did the same thing for another of the girls trapped inside a different tent by herself. We held down the biggest tent and turned to watch ours get shredded. The rain fly was split in multiple places and many of the poles were either bent at the metal joint or broken - matter of fact, they looked like someone put a firecracker to them with the way they splintered.

All of the kids were real troopers, but Jewel and Jonathan, the two oldest kids there were especially helpful as they grabbed tarps, helped take care of kids and all while dodging high wind gusts; though one gust almost swept Jewel off her feet. Jonathan saw it happen and quickly sprung into action sheltering her from harm, then they quickly jumped into a civil war redoubt (at the campsite) to shelter themselves from the winds of the storm.

Anyhow, after a while as the rain continued to pour, and the wind still blew, but was not nearly as strong, we picked up all our stuff and loaded (more like tossed) the tents (with the sleeping bags & any air mattressed still in them) piled the rest of our stuff around and on top of them in the back of the trucks and left! Thankfully the Newport News Park saw our disshevelled appearance, and graciously issued us a credit to use for another night - with better weather!

Here's the Daily Press' article on the storm & the damage it left behind.

Anyhow, We're just really thankful we were all okay and we had a really great opportunity to see ourselves in action and reevaluate how we responded in urgent times. We're also so thankful that in the midst of all the trees whipping around us, that the ones that fell, did not fall on us!

So - since the campout was planned to be a two day campout, we just couldn't NOT have dinner the next night together, so this time when we got together, we grilled on the back deck of one of the family friend's home, so we could seek shelter inside in case of inclement weather! By the way - the forecast was the same as the day before, isolated thunderstorms) and it turned out to be beautiful! Oh, the joys of weather forecasting!
